Background information about 'Infernal Overkill'

There are albums that define a genre, and then there are records like "Infernal Overkill" that practically set the whole damn template on fire. Destruction came roaring out of the German underground in 1985 with a debut full-length that still sounds absolutely feral today. This is thrash metal in its rawest, most unhinged form — the kind of record where you can practically smell the leather, the sweat, and the cheap rehearsal-room amps being pushed to the breaking point.

What makes "Infernal Overkill" so enduring is that it never once plays it safe. Schmier's snarling, venomous vocals sit on top of a rhythm section that just refuses to slow down, while the riffing veers between razor-sharp precision and pure chaos. Tracks like the title cut and the relentless opener hit with the force of a freight train, and yet there's a twisted sense of melody buried underneath all the aggression that keeps you coming back. This is the sound of three maniacs who had no idea they were writing history — they were just playing faster, harder, and louder than everyone around them.

It's impossible to overstate how important this record is to the birth of German thrash. Alongside the other Teutonic titans, Destruction helped forge a sound that was dirtier, meaner, and more dangerous than anything coming out of the Bay Area at the time. "Infernal Overkill" is the sound of a band with nothing to lose and everything to prove, and more than three decades later, it still hits like a punch to the jaw.
