Background information about 'Magick Rites'
Dopelord have never pretended to be anything other than what they are: a Polish quartet with a serious, almost religious devotion to fuzz, feedback and the devil's lettuce. "Magick Rites" is where that devotion first hardened into scripture. Originally conjured in 2012, this debut is the sound of four guys plugging in, turning everything up past the point of good sense, and letting the smoke do the rest. From the opening rip, the record rises like a cloud through a basement window — thick, slow, and impossible to ignore.
What makes it stick, though, isn't just the weight. It's the hooks. "Lucifer's Son" is the obvious altar here, a monstrous groove with a chorus that a whole generation of fuzz worshippers has been chanting ever since, and "Ghost Cargo From the Bong" is exactly as gloriously silly and gloriously heavy as that title promises. "Rise! Undying!" stretches past eleven minutes and earns every second, building a riff into a ritual. The production is raw in the best way — you can practically smell the tubes cooking.
Back in print on Season of Mist, this is the first communion all over again, and it still hits like a wall of amps. If you like your doom with a grin and your riffs with a body count, this one belongs on your shelf. Artwork by Tomasz Gornicki and Miodek.
