Background information about 'Magick Rites'
Magick Rites is the sound of a band discovering exactly what it wants to be, and the result is a thick, gloriously unhurried slab of stoner doom that still hits like a wall of amps turned to eleven. Dopelord came out of Poland in 2010 with a simple, sacred mission: worship the riff, worship the fuzz, and let the low end do the talking. On this 2012 debut they nailed it on the first try. The record opens with a rip of feedback that rises like smoke off a bonfire, and from there it never lets up — just molten, downtuned grooves, drums that swing with a lazy menace, and vocals that sound like they were recorded somewhere deep underground.
The centerpiece is "Lucifer's Son", a track so shamelessly catchy that more than a decade later people are still chanting that chorus like a prayer. That is the trick Dopelord pull off here: they make heaviness feel welcoming. The riffs are ungodly, sure, but they are also memorable, hummable, the kind of thing you find yourself humming on the way home from the show. "Possessed" and "Rise! Undying!" keep the ritual going, all wah-drenched leads and slow-burning dynamics, while "Ghost Cargo From the Bong" and "Magick Holocaust" lean into the band's gleefully irreverent side. Back in print on Season of Mist, this is where the congregation first gathered.
