Background information about 'Elemental Part One: Mourning Earth'
Fen have reached a breathtaking new artistic zenith with "Elemental Part One: Mourning Earth", their eighth full-length that sees the East Anglian trio returning to their foundational essence while embracing two decades of sonic evolution. Where their previous offering "Monuments to Absence" delivered relentless density and fury, this latest chapter deliberately creates breathing space – allowing themes to unfurl like morning mist over the boggy expanses that inspire their name. The decision to record large portions live brings an organic pulse that lets the natural rhythms develop with haunting authenticity.
The album captures Fen at their most balanced, achieving that elusive sweet spot between their black metal roots and post-black metal innovations. Tracks like "Glacier" and "Tectonic" showcase their mastery of atmospheric extremity, while pieces such as "Barrow" and "Moor" demonstrate their ability to channel aggression through more contemplative passages. Lyrically, the band paints vivid portraits of "morning mists clearing over boggy expanses to reveal grey, gloom-laden days of sorrow and regret" – a poetic meditation on endurance through existential ennui. This is Fen taking listeners on a journey through grim bogs, languid waterways, and dismal fogs, yet promising surcease on the other side.
