Background information about 'Elemental Part One: Mourning Earth'
Two decades in, Fen have done something quietly radical: they have stopped running. "Elemental Part One: Mourning Earth" is the East Anglian trio's eighth full-length, and where "Monuments to Absence" was dense, fast and relentless, this one opens the windows and lets the damp air in. Large stretches were cut live in the room, and you can hear it — the pieces breathe, riffs unfurl at their own pace, and the aggression that remains is channelled rather than spent. Black metal bones, post-black metal lungs.
The record moves like the landscape it was born from: glacier-slow, tectonic, waterlogged. Guitars shimmer and then sink into the peat; the rhythm section rolls rather than strikes. The band's own words set the scene — morning mist over the boggy expanses of the fens, grey light, sorrow and regret, and the slow twilight realisation that tomorrow promises only more of the same. That is not despair for show. It is weather. And somewhere past the fog and the bare rock, there is a strange, exhausted calm waiting.
This is the sound of a band who know exactly what they are and no longer need to prove it. Pressed on green vinyl with a printed insert, polylined inner sleeve and protection sleeve.
