Background information about 'Sinister Strain'

Stockholm's Flykt have never been interested in standing at the front of the room. Since 2016 they have worked from the edges, and "Sinister Strain" is what that patience sounds like when it finally detonates: nine tracks of razor-sharp Swedish black metal, cold as a January harbour and twice as unforgiving. The riffs come in tight, serrated bursts, the drums push forward without ever settling into comfort, and the whole record carries that distinctly Scandinavian sense of discipline — nothing wasted, nothing decorative, every second aimed at the throat.

What makes this second full-length so gripping is the way it refuses to coast on atmosphere alone. Where plenty of bands in this corner of the world hide behind reverb and distance, Flykt keep the songwriting front and centre. Melodies surface and vanish before you can pin them down, the tempo shifts land like sudden drops in air pressure, and the vocals sit just far enough back to feel like something heard through a wall rather than performed for you. It is hostile music, but it is also crafted music — the work of people who spent years away from view sharpening material instead of rushing it out.

The follow-up to 2019's "Charnel Heart" arrives with the weight of a band that knows exactly what it wants to be. Grim, precise, and genuinely thrilling in its aggression, "Sinister Strain" is the sound of Swedish black metal still finding new ways to draw blood.
