Background information about 'Sinister Strain'

Sinister Strain arrives like a cold gust off the Baltic, and Flykt clearly have no interest in making things comfortable for anyone. The Stockholm outfit formed back in 2016 as an act of defiance amid decay, and that stubborn, outsider spirit still runs through every second of this second full-length. Where their 2019 debut Charnel Heart felt like a band finding its footing, this one sounds like a band that has spent years sharpening blades in the dark and finally decided to use them.

The riffs come fast and razor-sharp, all treble-bitten Swedish tremolo and relentless forward motion, but there is real craft underneath the fury. Tracks like "Transcendent Rebellion" and "Unswerving Strife, Unyielding Will" build and collapse with a dramatic instinct that recalls the genre's greats without ever feeling like a tribute act. The production keeps things raw and immediate, letting the bass rumble and the cymbals sizzle rather than smothering everything in polish. It is black metal that respects the tradition but refuses to be buried by it.

What lifts Sinister Strain above the pack is its sense of purpose. This is not misanthropy for its own sake; it is the sound of people who chose the periphery on principle and turned that distance into fuel. Nine tracks, no filler, no wasted breath. For fans of: Dissection, Watain, Necrophobic, Dawn, Sacramentum.
