There's something deeply magnetic about how GÅTE weave the ancient into the now. The Norwegian folk-rock outfit from Trondheim, built around the Sundli siblings, have been at this since 1999 - and Sigil, their first album for Season of Mist, feels like a band hitting a whole new stride. It's not often you hear Hardanger fiddle and nyckelharpa rubbing shoulders with heavy guitar and programmed electronics so effortlessly, but that's exactly the magic here.
Across ten tracks, Sigil moves through old legends and folk narratives, asking what's left when the illusions fall away. Oskorsreia conjures the Wild Hunt as a mirror for modern excess, while Strandvaskar draws on coastal burial superstition for a quiet, haunting exchange between the living and the dead. The emotional peak comes with Mi Jord, where the earth itself seems to drift on shifting currents, before Jostedalsrypa closes things out - a song rooted in the true story of a child who survived alone in the mountains after the Black Death. Maria Franz of HEILUNG joins on the lead single Sannsiger, adding another layer of vocal depth. This is tradition not as museum piece, but as something urgent and breathing.
