Background information about 'Sigil'

GÅTE are back, and they've never sounded more vital. The Norwegian folk-rock outfit from Trondheim — built around the Sundli siblings and their signature blend of Hardanger fiddle with electric muscle — have been on quite a journey since forming in 1999. After a celebrated early run, a long hiatus, a triumphant 2017 return, and even representing Norway at Eurovision 2024, they're firing on all cylinders with "Sigil", their first album for Season of Mist.

And what an album it is. Across ten tracks, "Sigil" feels like stepping into an ancient forest that's somehow wired for electricity. The Hardanger fiddle weeps and dances alongside nyckelharpa and hurdy-gurdy, while programmed electronics and heavy guitar riffs ground it all in the here and now. Gunnhild Sundli's voice remains one of the most distinctive instruments in folk music — equal parts ethereal and utterly commanding. The album's narrative arc moves through ancient legend and folk narrative, questioning what survives when illusion falls away: enchantment, hunger, prophecy, mortality, and finally renewal. "Oskorsreia" reimagines the Wild Hunt as a mirror for modern consumption and excess, while "Strandvaskar" draws on coastal burial superstition for a quiet exchange between the living and the dead. The emotional weight builds toward "Mi Jord", where the earth itself seems to withdraw on shifting currents, before resolving in "Jostedalsrypa" — a song rooted in the true story of a child who survived alone in the mountains after the Black Death. Maria Franz of HEILUNG joins on lead single "Sannsiger", adding another layer of haunting depth.
