Green Lung have been brewing something special in the UK underground for a while now, but with Woodland Rites they've conjured up a record that feels like the real deal: a full-blooded, riff-drenched love letter to the occult, to nature, and to the kind of heavy music that makes your chest vibrate.

What hits you first is the sheer warmth of this thing. The production is rich and organic, letting every fuzzed-out guitar line and swirling organ passage breathe like mist through the trees. Vocalist Tom Templar sounds positively possessed — there's a soulful, almost gospel-like quality to his delivery that sets Green Lung apart from the doom-and-gloom pack. Tracks like "Let the Devil In" and "May Queen" balance crushing weight with irresistible hooks, while "The Ritual Tree" stretches out into something genuinely epic. This isn't just stoner doom by numbers; there's a classic rock swagger here, a touch of prog ambition, and a deep reverence for the folklore that inspired it. The Hammond organ work alone deserves its own altar — it weaves through the riffs like ivy through stone, giving everything a vintage, almost Deep Purple-meets-Black Sabbath grandeur.

What makes Woodland Rites truly special, though, is that it never forgets to be fun. Too many occult rock bands get lost in their own self-seriousness, but Green Lung sound like they're having the time of their lives summoning old gods in the woods. The songwriting is razor-sharp, the pacing is immaculate, and by the time the closing notes of "Into the Wild" fade out, you'll be reaching for the play button again. It's heavy, it's mystical, and it's got more memorable riffs than most bands manage in a career.
