Background information about 'Live in Brooklyn NY'

There are live albums that feel like a polite souvenir, and then there are live albums that hit you like a wall of frozen air. Winter's "Live in Brooklyn NY" is very much the latter. Recorded on September 2nd, 2012 at Warsaw in Brooklyn, this is the first official live document from the cult death doom pioneers — and it's an absolute monster.

The backstory alone should get any doom head's pulse going. After playing the West Coast leg of the "Power of the Riff East/West" series alongside the likes of Pelican and Noothgrush, Winter returned to their home turf with what might just be their definitive line-up: Stephen Flam on guitar, John Alman on bass and vocals, Jim Jackson on drums, and original keyboardist Tony Pinnisi — back behind the keys for the first time since the recording of "Into Darkness" way back in 1989. That kind of reunion alone is worth the price of admission.

But what really seals it is the performance. This isn't some nostalgia-driven cash grab; it's raw, real, and crushingly heavy. The band tears through every classic you'd hope for — "Servants of the Warsmen," "Power and Might," "Destiny," "Eternal Frost" — with a weight and menace that only two decades of living in the material could produce. There's no studio polish hiding the edges, just a band locked into their own slow-burning apocalypse and loving every second of it. When the riff drops, you'll understand exactly why Winter still matters.
