GRETA VAN FLEET · Palace For The People | CD

Jewelcase CD.

Background information about 'Palace For The People'

There is a moment, roughly forty seconds into the opening track, when Greta Van Fleet stop being a band with a reputation and simply become a band. "Palace For The People" arrives with the swagger of a group that has spent years in arenas and finally decided to build one of their own, out of riffs, hollers and Hammond-soaked haze. The Kiszka brothers and company still love their forefathers, obviously, but this time the vintage gear serves songs rather than mythology. "Tear It Down" kicks like a freight door swinging open, "Heart and the Beat" struts on a bassline you can feel in your sternum, and "Boughten Bliss" stretches out past the five-minute mark like the band forgot anyone was watching.

What makes this record land is the sequencing. Ballads like "Dreams You Hold" and "Field of Stars" don't feel like breathers, they feel like the quiet middle of a long, loud night, and when "Heya" and "Call My Own" come barreling back in, the payoff is enormous. The production is warm and wide, all room mics and bleed, which suits a group whose whole appeal is the sense that they are playing together in one space, sweating through the same take. "Born into This" closes things with six minutes of slow-burn catharsis, and by the final chord you get the feeling that this is the album they have been trying to make since the very first single.

It is not a reinvention, and it does not need to be. It is a band getting better at being themselves, with hooks sharp enough to justify the volume and enough heart to keep the whole thing from turning into a museum piece.
