Background information about ''
There are debut albums that arrive fully formed, and then there are records like Godslastering: Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry that feel like they've been unearthed from centuries-old soil, dripping with ancient malice and medieval dread. Hulder emerged from the underground tape circuit in 2018 and rapidly built a devoted following, but it was this 2021 debut that truly planted the flag — a dark medieval black metal monument delivered with rare conviction and startling maturity.
What makes this record so compelling is its architectural breadth. Across eight tracks, Hulder navigates between two distinct modes without ever losing coherence: there are passages of stripped, blast-driven intensity where the guitars bite like frost on stone and the atmosphere thickens into something almost suffocating, and then there are moments of acoustic guitar, medieval keyboard, and unhurried melody that open up genuine emotional depth. The contrast never feels like a gimmick — the songwriting earns every shift. "De Dijle", named after the river running through Hulder's native Mechelen, anchors the album in a specific geography, the Belgian lowlands as a wellspring of folklore, darkness, and ancient continuity. And then there's "A Forlorn Peasant's Hymn", perhaps the album's most arresting structural moment: opening in ethereal clean song before fracturing into corrosive black metal, a transition that holds because the conviction behind it is absolute.
The production carries exactly the right amount of haze — full enough to let each element breathe, raw enough to keep those underground roots audible. Mark Riddick's cover artwork and Liana Rakijian's photography complete a package that feels deliberately, beautifully cohesive. This is black metal that understands tradition without being enslaved by it, medieval in spirit but utterly alive in execution.
