HUMAN is the long-awaited second album by Jess By The Lake, the solo vehicle of Jasmin Lempinen – formerly the commanding frontwoman of Jess And The Ancient Ones. And let me tell you, this thing is a beast.
Where her previous work flirted with psychedelic occult rock, HUMAN strips things back to something far more raw and visceral. Recorded live to analog tape in the legendary Höyrybaari studio in Lapinlahti, Finland, during the summer of 2023, this album breathes. You can feel the room, the tape warmth, the sweat. Produced by Tommi Saikkonen and guitarist Sampo Leksis (who also mixed it), the sound is unpolished in all the right ways – honest, gritty, and completely uncompromising. As the title suggests, this is an album about people: their fates, their struggles, the human condition. It's heavier than the debut, both sonically and lyrically, and Lempinen's voice has never sounded more commanding. Tracks like the lead single hit with a swaggering, fuzzed-out groove that'll rattle your speakers, while the more atmospheric moments drift into a beautiful, melancholic haze. This isn't retro for the sake of it – it's timeless rock music made by someone who feels it in her bones.
