There are reissues, and then there are definitive reissues. Darkness Shall Rise Productions have done the underground a massive favour by digging deep into the Thuringian vaults of Impending Doom — a band that, between 1995 and 2005, carved out a cult following far beyond German borders with their distinct blend of doom, death, thrash, and black metal.

This CD compiles the earliest official recordings of the band: the \u201cMessias Abaddon\u201d demo from 1995 and the \u201cPagan Fires\u201d promo from 1996. And let me tell you, if you only know the later album material, these tracks might just knock you off your feet. The Messias Abaddon demo is a raw, sinister bastard child of early My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and Darkthrone\u2019s \u201cSoulside Journey\u201d \u2014 pure, unadulterated doom-death of the most gloomy kind. It\u2019s a testament to the band\u2019s musical roots before they truly found their own voice.

Then comes Pagan Fires, and you can already hear the shift. The doom-death foundation is still there, but now thrash riffs and blackened atmospheres creep into the soundscape. The vocals become more versatile, the darkness more layered. Tracks like \u201cAeon of Dreams\u201d and the title track \u201cPagan Fires\u201d hit just as hard today as they did three decades ago. Remastered by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony, the sound has been given a new lease on life. Packed with unseen photos and a brand new interview with all band members, this is absolutely essential for anyone with a taste for dark, 90s German metal history.
