When Swedish progressive melodic death metal masters In Mourning unleashed "Garden Of Storms" in 2019, they didn't just deliver another album – they completed a trilogy that had been brewing since 2012's "The Weight of Oceans".This is their strongest effort since "Monolith", and arguably their best album to date. The Falun quintet has crafted something thatfinds a nice balance between the crushing weight of death metal, the compositional intricacies of progressive-styled approaches, and the melodic, easily digestible edge of rock music. Opening with the majestic "Black Storm", the album immediately showcasesvocalist Tobias Netzell's impressive range and versatility in both his growls and his clean singing, while the band weavesshoegaze-tinted passages that remind of something Agalloch might have doneinto their progressive death metal framework.A new rhythm section, a more inclusive approach to songwriting, a more relaxed production experience, and some new voices serve to complete the trilogy, and the results are absolutely stunning. Tracks like "Magenta Ritual" unfold ashypnotizing slabs of progressive melo-doom, inserting brief but effective spans of airy atmosphere, while the aggressive *"Huntress Moon"*demands attention with fervent riffing and leads, supported eerily well by stellar drum performance. The album's crowning achievement is undoubtedly the nearly ten-minute closer "The Lost Outpost", whichholds easily one of the grandest moments heard in metal all year, with a bit that simply shatters any words that even attempt to hold it.Mixed and mastered by Jonas Kjellgren, with artwork by Kristian Wåhlin, this is an album that rewards repeated listening and stands as a testament to In Mourning's evolution.
