Background information about 'Monolith'

There are albums that creep up on you slowly and then never let go, and "Monolith" by In Mourning is exactly that kind of record. Originally released in 2010 and given a well-deserved vinyl reissue by Agonia Records, this is melodic death metal with a progressive heart and a very long memory. The Swedish quintet never settles for the easy payoff: riffs unfold in layers, tempos shift like weather, and Tobias Netzell's growl sits right on top of twin-guitar harmonies that could break your heart as easily as they could flatten you. Opener "For You To Know" sets the tone with patience and menace, while "Debris" builds a slow, gorgeous tension before the whole thing crashes down.

What makes "Monolith" special is the sense of scale. This is a record that thinks in cathedrals, not choruses. "The Smoke" stretches out and breathes, "With You Came Silence" is pure melancholic grace, and the closing "The Final Solution (Entering The Black Lodge)" runs over twelve minutes without ever losing the thread. Travis Smith's artwork wraps the whole thing in cold, monumental imagery that matches the music perfectly, and the production by the band together with Jonas Kjellgren keeps every detail audible without sanding off the edges.

It is heavy, it is beautiful, and it rewards repeated listening in a way few albums of its era manage. If you have ever stood in the rain and felt strangely at peace, this one is for you.
