Background information about 'Metal'
Manilla Road's self-titled debut "Metal" stands as a monumental cornerstone in the evolution of epic heavy metal, showcasing the band's raw yet sophisticated approach that would later define their legendary status. Originally released in 1982, this album captures the Kansas-based outfit at their most primal and ambitious, blending traditional heavy metal with progressive elements and Mark Shelton's distinctive vocal style that ranges from haunting melodies to powerful battle cries. The record features crushing riffs, intricate guitar work, and mythological themes that would become the band's trademark, establishing the foundation for what many consider the quintessential American epic metal sound.
The album's production maintains that authentic early 80s metal atmosphere while allowing each instrument to breathe and contribute to the overall sonic landscape. Songs like "Enter the Warrior" and "Defender" demonstrate the band's ability to craft both aggressive anthems and more nuanced compositions, while the epic arrangements hint at the progressive tendencies that would flourish in their later works. This reissue preserves the original's dynamic range and organic feel, making it essential for both longtime devotees and newcomers discovering the roots of epic metal.
