Background information about 'A Year With No Summer'
Obsidian Kingdom delivers a mesmerizing journey through atmospheric progressive metal with "A Year With No Summer", an album that captures the haunting beauty of isolation and environmental catastrophe. The Spanish collective crafts a sonic landscape that's both crushing and ethereal, weaving together heavy riffs with ambient textures that create an almost cinematic experience. Each track feels like a chapter in a larger narrative, with the band's ability to shift between crushing metal passages and delicate, atmospheric interludes showcasing their remarkable compositional skills.
The album's concept draws inspiration from the volcanic winter of 1816, when Mount Tambora's eruption caused global climate anomalies, and this historical backdrop provides the perfect framework for the band's exploration of darkness and resilience. Songs like "The Kandinsky Group" and the epic title track demonstrate Obsidian Kingdom's mastery of dynamics, building from whispered beginnings to thunderous climaxes that feel both inevitable and surprising. The production maintains clarity even in the heaviest moments, allowing every instrument to breathe while maintaining the oppressive atmosphere that defines the record.
