Background information about 'Imrama (Reissue)'

Some debuts announce themselves with a whisper. "Imrama" arrives like weather rolling in off the Atlantic — cold, ancient, and utterly certain of itself. Primordial's first full-length, originally let loose in 1995, is the sound of a band already in possession of a voice nobody else had. Before they grew into the towering, grief-stricken epics of their later years, they were here: raw, hungry, and steeped in a black metal that had already started dreaming of soil, stone, and old gods rather than the frozen north.

What makes "Imrama" so gripping is how restless it is. "Infernal Summer" and "Here I Am King" ride on barbed, melodic riffing that cuts against the grain, while "The Darkest Flame" and "The Fires" stretch out into brooding, folk-tinged territory that would become the band's signature. A. A. Nemtheanga's vocals are a revelation even this early — a keening, wounded cry that sounds less performed than summoned. And then there is the second half, where the tape digs into the demo era: "To Enter Pagan", "Among The Lazarae", and a clutch of rough-hewn early takes that show exactly where this strange, magnificent beast came from. It is history you can hear being made, warts and all.
