Background information about 'Tunguska'
There is something deeply unsettling about an instrumental record that refuses you a single word of comfort, and SHAKHTYOR have built their whole world on exactly that refusal. "Tunguska" is a slow, tectonic collapse of an album — six tracks that grind forward like machinery buried under permafrost, never in a hurry, never asking for permission. The guitars are tuned so low they feel less like strings and more like shifting plates, and the drums land with the weight of a mine shaft closing behind you. It is sludge and doom in its purest, most elemental form, and it is absolutely magnificent.
What makes this record special is the patience. "Baryon" opens with a nine-minute instrumental crawl that lets every riff breathe, and by the time "Pechblende" and the towering "Zerfall" arrive, the band has you exactly where they want you — hypnotized, heavy-lidded, nodding along to something that sounds like the earth remembering an old wound. "Schlagwetter" and the title track bring a grim, rolling groove, while "Solaris" closes things out with nearly ten minutes of brooding, oceanic doom. No vocals, no gimmicks, no escape hatch — just riffs, atmosphere and sheer gravitational pull. Mighty as ever, and then some.
