Background information about 'Join The Army (Re-Release)'
Few records capture the exact moment a band stops being a local legend and starts being a problem for everybody else quite like "Join The Army". Suicidal Tendencies had already detonated the hardcore scene with their debut, but here they widened the blast radius — Mike Muir's frantic, half-spoken delivery riding over riffs that swing as hard as they slam. This is Venice Beach skate punk with a funk undercurrent and a metallic edge, and it still sounds like nothing else in the rack.
Listen to the title track and you hear the blueprint: gang-shouted choruses, a rhythm section that refuses to sit still, and a sneering sense of humor that keeps the whole thing from tipping into self-parody. The band's crossover instincts are all over this thing — thrash tempos colliding with grooves that would make a funk band jealous, all wrapped up in that unmistakable Southern California attitude. It's confrontational without being dumb, catchy without being soft, and it absolutely refuses to behave.
