Background information about 'Join The Army (Re-Release)'
When Suicidal Tendencies dropped "Join The Army" in 1987, they were already the most misunderstood band in American hardcore — too metal for the punks, too punk for the metalheads, and absolutely untouchable live. This is the record where Mike Muir's manic, half-spoken delivery found its perfect foil: riffing that swings between skate-thrash velocity and thick, groove-heavy muscle. The title track alone is a masterclass in tension, all barked verses and that snarling, anthemic chorus that a whole generation of Venice Beach kids screamed back at the top of their lungs.
What makes "Join The Army" so enduring is how restless it is. The band never settles into one tempo or one mood — they lurch, they swagger, they sprint, and somehow it all holds together through sheer attitude. Rocky George's guitar work is the secret weapon here, slicing through the mix with a tone that's part chainsaw, part funk. It's a record that sounds like a pit about to open up, and thirty-plus years on it still hits with the same sweaty, confrontational energy that made the band such a force in the first place.
