Background information about 'Split'

Any record that opens with a multi-layered recording of vomiting sessions is not exactly knocking politely on the door, and Tchornobog clearly prefer it that way. "The Vomiting Choir" sprawls across 24:08 minutes, a descending spiral into a bottomless pit of dissonant sonic miasma, pure negativity and — surprise — a startling amount of compositional complexity. On this split the Portland, Oregon outfit shares the wax with Abyssal, and the pairing makes perfect sense: two acts that refuse to stay politely inside one genre box.

Tchornobog was summoned in 2014 by Ukrainian-born multi-instrumentalist Markov Soroka, also known for Aureole, Drown and Krukh, and the project keeps drifting away from its assumed crossroads of death, doom and black metal. Friends of Deathspell Omega, The Ruins of Beverast and Ulcerate will recognise the general direction, yet Soroka charts a course entirely his own through these extremely dark waters — and those who sail in his wake might even bump into the ghost of early Mörktpsyko along the way. The name itself nods to a reconstructed Slavonic deity, the "Black God", a supposed bringer of misfortune who slipped from Helmold von Bosau's twelfth-century chronicle all the way into Neil Gaiman's "American Gods". Fitting, really, for music this haunted.

After the self-titled debut landed to critical acclaim in 2017, this split arrives as a first taste of the darkness still ahead. Abyssal's "Antechamber Of The Wakeless Mind" answers with its own cavernous weight, making the whole record feel like a conversation between two very different abysses.
