Background information about 'Split'
Any record that opens with a multi-layered recording of vomiting sessions is telling you exactly where it stands, and "The Vomiting Choir" does not disappoint. Twenty-four minutes and eight seconds of TCHORNOBOG unspooling a descending spiral into a bottomless pit, a mostly dissonant sonic miasma of pure negativity that somehow keeps revealing new layers of surprising complexity the deeper you go. Markov Soroka, the Ukrainian-born multi-instrumentalist behind the project, has never been interested in easy listening, and this split with ABYSSAL finds him pushing further down the crossroads of death, doom and black metal without ever settling on one lane.
What makes this thing so gripping is the sheer nerve of it. One track, one enormous gesture, and yet nothing feels padded or self-indulgent. The Portland outfit charts a course entirely its own through these extremely dark waters, and anyone who sails in its wake might just bump into the ghost of early MOTÖRPSYCHO along the way. ABYSSAL answers with "Antechamber Of The Wakeless Mind", a counterweight that keeps the whole record balanced on a knife edge. Since 2014 TCHORNOBOG has been Soroka's vessel for a very particular kind of darkness, and the self-titled debut from 2017 already proved he could deliver. This split is the taste of what comes next, and it lands like a warning shot.
