Background information about 'Conqueror'
There are doom metal bands, and then there are the ones who actually understand that the genre lives and dies on atmosphere. The Gates of Slumber have always belonged to that second, rarer breed, and Conqueror is the record where it all clicked into place. Originally unleashed in 2008, this is the sound of a band grabbing the occult dread of late '70s metal, lacing it with the anthemic swagger of the '80s, and then dragging the whole thing through a swamp of modern, gut-rumbling production. The result is heavy in a way that gets under your skin rather than just rattling your speakers.
The songwriting here is absurdly strong. Karl Simon and company knew exactly how to balance the slow, suffocating crawl of classic doom with riffs that suddenly surge forward like a freight train. There's a little Saint Vitus in the bones, a sprinkle of pulp horror in the lyrics, and more than a hint of Lucio Fulci's creeping eeriness hanging over the whole affair. Tracks like Conqueror and Ice Worm aren't just exercises in volume, they're genuinely crafted anthems that bridge the gap between the pioneers of the genre and the modern doom scene with real confidence.
