Background information about 'Conqueror'

There are doom bands, and then there are the ones who actually understand that the genre is built on a foundation of pure, unrelenting weight. The Gates of Slumber have been quietly schooling the rest of the world on this for over two decades, and "Conqueror" is the moment where everything they'd been building finally snapped into terrifying focus.

Originally dropped in 2008, this is the Indiana trio's third full-length, and it still hits like a collapsing cathedral. What makes it so special is the way it refuses to sit still. One minute you're getting dragged through the occult murk of late '70s metal, the next there's a flash of '80s anthem muscle, and throughout there's this modern production sheen that keeps every riff razor-sharp. The songwriting is just impeccable, a masterclass in how to make slow feel absolutely lethal.

The atmosphere is pure apocalyptic dread, but there's a wicked streak of pulp horror and even a sliver of Lucio Fulci's eerie cinematic unease snaking through these tracks. You can hear echoes of Saint Vitus and the pioneering giants of the genre, but The Gates of Slumber never sound like anyone but themselves. They mediate between modern doom and its ancestors with a confidence that most bands would kill for, and "Conqueror" remains a true classic of the form.
