Background information about 'Conqueror'
There are records that simply crush you, and then there is Conqueror — an album that grabs you by the collar and does not let go until the very last riff has faded into a wall of feedback. The Gates of Slumber have always stood for pure, unadorned doom metal, and with this one they deliver the kind of heavy that feels less like music and more like a physical force pressing down on your chest.
From the opening notes, Karl Simon's riffs roll in like a slow-moving storm front, all weight and inevitability, while the rhythm section locks into a groove so deep you could lose yourself in it for days. There is a bluesy, almost mournful undertow running through these tracks — a sense that this is music born from real life, real loss, real struggle. This is doom metal the way it was meant to be played: honest, heavy and completely devoid of any modern gloss or studio trickery.
What makes Conqueror so special is the way it balances crushing heaviness with genuine songwriting. These are not just riffs for the sake of riffs — there are hooks buried in the sludge, melodies that surface just long enough to haunt you before being swallowed again by the tide of distortion. It is the sound of a band at the absolute peak of their powers, doing exactly what they were put on this earth to do.
