Background information about 'Leviathan'

Leviathan finds Therion doing what they have always done best: building cathedrals out of riffs, choirs and strings, then letting the whole thing rumble like a storm front rolling in over the Baltic. Christofer Johnsson's symphonic metal institution has never been shy about grand gestures, and this record leans into that instinct with real hunger. Opener "The Leaf on the Oak of Far" sets the tone immediately, all massed vocals and orchestral swells, before "Tuonela" drags us straight into the Finnish underworld with a chorus that refuses to leave your skull. The title track is the centrepiece, a slow-burning beast that trades between choral grandeur and a riff that hits like a hammer on an anvil.

What makes Leviathan such a pleasure is the balance. It is heavy enough for the purists and theatrical enough for anyone who ever secretly loved a good opera record, and it never once feels like a costume. "Die Wellen der Zeit" and "Aži Dahāka" show off the band's knack for melody that sticks, while "Great Marquis of Hell" and "Psalm of Retribution" bring the darker, more ritualistic side of the Therion universe to the foreground. The production is enormous without turning muddy, every choir line and lead guitar sitting exactly where it should. This digipak edition sweetens the deal with a bonus block of alternate and instrumental takes, including a full Marco vocal version of "Tuonela" that gives the song an entirely new face.
