There is a very specific kind of cold that Thulcandra deal in, and on "Under a Frozen Sun" they let it settle deep into your bones. The German outfit have long carried the torch for that early-nineties Swedish sound — the one built on tremolo-picked ice, blastbeats that hit like sleet against a window, and melodies that somehow feel both beautiful and fatal. This record does not reinvent that wheel. It sharpens it, hones it, and drives it straight through the heart of anyone who ever wore out a copy of a certain Gothenburg classic.
What makes the album such a rewarding listen is the balance. The riffing is razor-wire tight, but there is real craft in the way the songs breathe — a mournful lead line here, a sudden drop into a crawling mid-tempo passage there, all of it held together by a production that is raw enough to feel dangerous yet clear enough to hear every nuance. The vocals spit and rasp with conviction, and the rhythm section keeps everything locked in a grim, relentless march. It is the sound of a band who know exactly what they are doing and are having a genuinely great time doing it.
