Background information about 'Silence Teaches You How to Sing / Silencing the Singing'

There are records that feel like a door opening into a room you never knew existed, and these two EPs are exactly that. Ulver were already far from the black metal that made their name when they cut "Silence Teaches You How to Sing" and "Silencing the Singing" back in 2001, and what they left behind is a pair of drifting, glitch-ridden, almost weightless pieces that still sound like nothing else in their catalogue. Murmured voices, tape hiss, broken beats and long stretches of near-stillness — this is music that breathes rather than announces itself. Put together on one double LP, the two works finally sit side by side the way they always belonged, and the remaster by Jaime Gomez Arellano gives all that fragile detail room to shimmer.

What gets me every time is how patient it all is. "Silence Teaches You How to Sing Pt. 1" and "Pt. 2" unspool like something half-remembered, while "Darling, Didn't We Kill You?" and "Speak Dead Speaker" push into stranger, more haunted territory. "Not Saved" closes things out with a quiet unease that lingers long after the needle lifts. It is avant-garde in the truest sense — not difficult for the sake of it, but genuinely strange, genuinely beautiful, and completely its own world. The new artwork by Paschalis Zervas fits the mood perfectly, and the whole package is built with real care: two 180-gram records in a sturdy gatefold, an insert, four postcards, and records stored outside the sleeve to keep the seams intact.
