Background information about 'Beautiful Ghosts'

Pop music has exactly one universal subject: love. Metal has spent four decades sprinting away from it. So when "Beautiful Ghosts" landed on the desk, credited to a one-man project out of Canada that has never once played it safe, eyebrows went up. Unreqvited is the shape-shifting vehicle of multi-instrumentalist 鬼, and on this sixth full-length he walks straight into the one emotion headbangers are supposed to find terrifying. Love, passion, devotion — no irony, no distance, no protective layer of misanthropy. Just a man digging through his own head and reporting back with everything he found.

And what he found is gorgeous. There are lighter, more uplifting passages here than anything Unreqvited has given us before, though the dark turns are still there, waiting at the corners to balance the ledger. The big new weapon is clean vocals, used generously across the record, and they change the whole architecture of the songs. Opener "All Is Lost" even throws in playfully progressive rhythms, a wink that keeps the melancholy from ever turning saccharine. The old signatures survive intact: the massive anthemic refrains that made "Mosaic I: L'amour Et L'ardeur" so huge, the plain-spoken sadness of the 2016 debut "Disquiet", the orchestral sweep of "Empathica". All of it braided together into something that refuses a single genre tag, a rich palette of colours blended by one theme. Play it loud, play it late, and let it get under your skin.
