Background information about 'Beautiful Ghosts'
Love is the one topic that heavy music has always treated like a live grenade — and on "Beautiful Ghosts", the sixth full-length from Unreqvited, the project's sole mastermind 鬼 walks straight toward it with open arms. What comes back is not a metal record that happens to be tender, but a record where tenderness is the weapon. Clean vocals appear throughout for the first time in the project's catalogue, and they land like light through a stained-glass window: startling, warm, and impossible to ignore. The opening track "All Is Lost" even throws in playfully progressive rhythms, a curveball that keeps you leaning in.
And yet nothing here feels like a betrayal of what came before. The anthemic refrains that made "Mosaic I: L'amour Et L'ardeur" so enormous are still doing heavy lifting, the simple melancholic melodies of the 2016 debut "Disquiet" still hum underneath, and the orchestral grandeur of "Empathica" still swells at exactly the right moment. 鬼 has gathered every strand of a decade-long, shape-shifting career and braided them into something that refuses a single genre tag. Dark twists keep the score honest, balancing all that uplift so the sweetness never turns saccharine.
Since 2016, Unreqvited has been a constantly mutating creature, and "Beautiful Ghosts" is its most emotionally exposed skin yet. Put the needle down, let the gatefold fall open, and let this one haunt you properly.
