Background information about 'Live From The Hammersmith Odeon'
There are live albums, and then there are live albums that feel like a full-blown declaration of war. Venom tearing through London's Hammersmith Odeon is very much the latter. This is the sound of a band at the absolute peak of their unholy powers, captured in front of a crowd that knew exactly what they were in for. From the moment "Too Loud (For the Crowd)" detonates, it's pure, unfiltered chaos — raw, ragged, and gloriously unpolished. Cronos sounds like he's gargling gravel and gasoline, while Mantas and Abaddon build a wall of noise that would make lesser bands run for cover.
What makes this recording so essential is how it bottles the sheer menace of early Venom. "Black Metal" and "Countess Bathory" hit like a boot to the chest, all feral energy and no mercy. The setlist reads like a greatest-hits of blasphemy — "In Nomine Satanas," "Welcome to the Hell," "Witching Hour" — and every single track feels like it could tear the roof off the place. The bass solo is a thunderous, gut-rumbling moment that reminds you just how much of Venom's power came from Cronos's low-end assault. This isn't polished, radio-friendly metal. It's the blueprint for an entire genre, played live with the kind of reckless abandon that made Black Metal a household curse word. For anyone who wants to understand where extreme metal truly began, this is mandatory listening.
