Icons of Evil is the sound of a band deciding that subtlety was never part of the deal. Vital Remains had already built a reputation as one of the most uncompromising acts in American death metal, and this record — originally unleashed in 2007 — arrives like a slab of granite dropped from a great height. The riffs are enormous, the rhythms are relentless, and Glen Benton's guest growl on the title track gives the whole thing an extra layer of menace. It is not a record that asks for your patience.
