Some records don't knock politely. "Icons of Evil" kicks the door off its hinges and dares you to step inside. Vital Remains' 2007 monster was the follow-up to the already controversial "Dechristianize", and somehow it went harder, faster and nastier in every direction at once. This is symphonic death metal played at the speed of a collapsing cathedral — hyper-blast drums, choirs looming out of the dark, and riffs stacked so high they blot out the sky. Back on Black has brought it back on CD, and honestly, it has lost none of its bite.
The lineup alone tells you what you're in for. Glen Benton of Deicide turns in some of the most unhinged, guttural vocal work of his entire career — a man gargling brimstone and loving every second of it. Beside him, Dave Suzuki handles guitar, bass and more like a one-man wrecking crew, while founder and rhythm guitarist Tony Lazaro keeps the whole thing anchored in pure, ugly heaviness. Behind the desk sits Erik Rutan (Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation) at Mana Recording Studios, and he gives the album exactly what it needs: a wall of sound with no cracks to hide in. Ten tracks, zero mercy, and a title cut that still flattens crowds almost two decades on.
