Background information about 'Runaljod - Ragnarok'
Wardruna delivers a mesmerizing conclusion to their groundbreaking Runaljod trilogy with "Runaljod - Ragnarok", an album that stands as a towering achievement in Nordic folk and ambient music. This third installment weaves together ancient Norse traditions with modern atmospheric soundscapes, creating something that feels both timeless and urgently contemporary. The Norwegian ensemble, led by Einar Selvik, has crafted ten tracks that serve as sonic runes themselves, each piece carefully constructed using traditional instruments like the tagelharpa, frame drums, and various Nordic folk instruments alongside haunting vocals that seem to channel the very spirits of ancient Scandinavia.
The album's power lies in its ability to transport listeners directly into the mythological world of Norse cosmology, where each track represents a different rune and its associated meanings. From the opening ceremonial weight of "Tyr" to the epic conclusion of "Runaljod", the album maintains an incredible sense of journey and transformation. The dual "MannaR" tracks ("Drivande" and "Liv") showcase Wardruna's mastery at building emotional crescendos through repetitive, trance-inducing rhythms that feel both meditative and powerful. This isn't just music - it's a spiritual experience that connects modern audiences with their ancestral roots through sound.
