Wayfarer have never been a band content to simply play metal and call it a day. With "A Romance with Violence", the Denver four-piece drag the blackened heart of American metal through the dust, the whiskey-soaked saloons and the blood-stained prairies of the Old West, and the result is nothing short of staggering. This is an album that sounds like the frontier itself: wide-open, unforgiving, and impossibly cinematic.

From the opening lonesome swell of "The Curtain Pulls Back" through the sprawling, ten-minute epics that follow, Wayfarer build a world you can practically smell. The twin-guitar work of Shane McCarthy and Joe Strong-Truscelli weaves between tremolo-picked fury and mournful, Morricone-tinged clean passages, while the rhythm section of James Hansen and Isaac Faulk gallops like a posse of wild horses. "The Crimson Rider (Gallows Frontier, Act I)" and "The Iron Horse (Gallows Frontier, Act II)" unfold like chapters of a grim western novel, full of vengeance, dust and gallows humor. And then there is "Vaudeville", a ten-minute closer that swaggers and seethes with the theatrical menace of a travelling show gone wrong. This is black metal refracted through a distinctly American lens, and it is utterly, thrillingly its own thing.
