WORMWOOD · A | CD

Background information about 'A'

Wormwood have been on an absolute tear since their formation in 2014, and this self-titled release feels like the culmination of everything the Stockholm outfit has been building toward. If you've been following their trajectory — four full-lengths, an EP, a live record, and now this — you already know these Swedes don't do anything by halves. What we get here is that signature fusion of extreme metal with atmospheric depth that's become their calling card, but there's a confidence in the songwriting that suggests a band operating at the peak of their powers.

The cinematic scope is staggering. Sverker Widgren's mix and master at Wing Studios gives the whole thing this raw-yet-polished sheen that lets the melodies breathe while still hitting with genuine force. There's Scandinavian melancholy woven through every track, those folk-tinged undercurrents that bubble up when you least expect them, and an emotional intensity that separates Wormwood from so many of their peers. The eerie soundscapes don't just sit in the background — they're integral to the architecture of these songs, creating this gorgeous tension between beauty and brutality. When the riffs hit, they hit hard, but it's the melodic sensibility that keeps you coming back. You can hear why these guys have been nominated twice for Best Rock/Metal Act at the P3 Gold Awards and why they've been climbing the Swedish charts with each release. This isn't just metal for metal's sake — it's storytelling with teeth.
