Background information about 'Towards the Shores of The End'

There are split releases, and then there are splits that feel like a single, breathing organism — and "Towards the Shores of the End" is very much the latter. Fen and De Arma don't just share a slab of wax or plastic here; they share a mood, a weather system, a whole emotional landscape. The result is one of those rare collaborations where neither band bends to the other, yet both sound utterly at home together.

Fen open the proceedings with the kind of sprawling, atmospheric black metal they have quietly perfected over the years. "Soilbound" and "Ageless Threnody" are vast, windswept things — all tremolo-picked melancholy and aching, melodic undercurrents. There's a real sense of landscape to their half of the record, a feeling of standing on some grey, rain-lashed moor and simply letting the weather do its work on your soul. The title track, "Towards the Shores of the End," is the emotional peak, a slow-building tide that swallows you whole before the brief, elegiac "Bereft (Reprise)" lets the silence back in.

Then De Arma take over, and the atmosphere shifts — not away from the gloom, but deeper into it, with a more gothic, post-punk-tinged sensibility. "Crimson Waters Ebbing the Shore" is a masterclass in tension and release, while "Noemata" and "From Horizon to Oblivion" drift with a kind of wounded elegance. It's music that aches beautifully, the kind of thing you put on at dusk and forget to turn off.
