Background information about 'Disaster Triumphant'
Disaster Triumphant arrives like weather rolling in from a direction nobody was watching. Bonjour Tristesse build their sound from the ground up — cold tremolo riffs, drums that hit like collapsing scaffolding, and a vocal rasp that sounds less performed than excavated. This is atmospheric black metal with dirt under its fingernails, and it refuses to be pretty about it.
What sets the record apart is the tension it sustains. Melodies surface through the murk like light through industrial smog, then get swallowed again. There are passages of genuine, aching beauty here, but they never arrive as consolation — they arrive as contrast, which makes them hit twice as hard. The songwriting trusts silence and space as much as it trusts volume, and the payoff is a record that feels vast without ever feeling bloated. It is grief and defiance sharing the same breath, and it works.
