CIRITH UNGOL · All the Shadows | BLACK LP

Black vinyl, 4 page insert.

Background information about 'All the Shadows'

Cirith Ungol never really left. They just waited in the dark, sharpening their blades. "All the Shadows" is the sound of a band who knows exactly who they are and refuses to apologize for it — a full-length that walks the same crooked path they carved out decades ago, only now with the confidence of survivors. Tim Baker's voice remains a force of nature, that strange, theatrical rasp that sounds like it was forged in some candlelit tower, and here it sits perfectly on top of riffs that swing between doom-laden crawl and galloping trad metal glory.

What makes this record such a joy is how unbothered it is by trends. Armand John Anthony's guitar work is muscular and melodic in equal measure, Jarvis Leatherby's bass gives everything a warm, rumbling backbone, and Robert Garven's drumming is the kind of instinctive, propulsive playing you simply cannot fake. Produced by the band together with Anthony and engineered, mixed and mastered by the same hand, the album sounds huge without ever feeling polished into sterility — there is grit in the grain, dust on the strings, and that unmistakable Cirith Ungol atmosphere hanging over every track. Michael Whelan's cover art seals the deal, framing the whole thing as the piece of dark fantasy heavy metal it so clearly wants to be.
