Background information about 'Frost And Fire (40th Anniversary Edition)'

There are debut albums, and then there is "Frost And Fire" — a record that landed in 1981 like a sword dropped on a table in a quiet tavern. Cirith Ungol came out of Ventura, California with something nobody else had: doom weight, trad metal gallop and a vocalist, Tim Baker, whose shriek sounded less like singing and more like a prophecy shouted from a burning tower. Four decades on, this thing still refuses to sound polite.

The songs themselves are the reason people keep coming back. The title track opens with that marching riff and never lets the tension drop, while "I'm Alive" swings with a swagger that most bands of the era could only dream of. "A Little Fire" and "What Does It Take" show the band's knack for hooks buried under granite, and "Edge Of A Knife" and "Better Off Dead" bring the kind of dark, theatrical drama that made them cult heroes in the first place. It is fantasy, it is grit, it is a bunch of guys who clearly grew up on both Black Sabbath and old pulp novels — and it works.

This 40th anniversary edition pairs the album with a bonus disc, pressed on silver vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve with an 8 page booklet and a download code. A proper monument to one of heavy metal's most gloriously strange origin stories.
