Background information about 'A Sultan's Ransom'
There is a certain kind of magic that only happens when British steel meets a band that refuses to play it safe, and "A Sultan's Ransom" is that magic caught on tape. Cloven Hoof were never the tidy, well-behaved cousins of the NWOBHM family — they were the ones who read too much pulp fantasy, cranked the amps past reason and let their imaginations run completely wild. This record is the sound of a band swinging for the fences, and landing it again and again.
The riffs come thick and fast, all gleaming twin-guitar harmonies and galloping rhythms, but what really sets it apart is the sheer theatricality of it all. There is drama in every chorus, a sense of storytelling that pulls you into forgotten kingdoms, silver-clad heroes and nights of a thousand and one tales. The vocals soar, the solos burn, and the rhythm section drives everything forward with a swagger that makes you want to raise a fist and shout along. It is unashamedly over the top — and that is exactly the point. This is heavy metal as escapism, as adventure, as pure joy.
