When A Sultan's Ransom first landed in 1989, Cloven Hoof were already the kind of band that made the British underground feel like a secret worth keeping. Here was a crew from the Black Country who took the galloping grit of the NWOBHM and shoved it through a prog-shaped filter, all while singer Russ North delivered every line like a man who'd just seen something he couldn't unsee. The result was an album that sounded huge, weird and utterly convinced of its own mythology — and decades later it still does.

What makes this record such a joy is how unashamedly it swings for the fences. The riffs are sharpened to a fine point, the rhythm section locks in with a swagger that most bands only dream about, and the songwriting refuses to sit still for a second.
