When Cloven Hoof unleashed "A Sultan's Ransom" back in 1989, the British steel scene was already shifting under everyone's feet, yet this lot from Wolverhampton simply refused to read the memo. What you get here is prime, unapologetic NWOBHM with a theatrical streak — galloping twin guitars, a rhythm section that never lets up, and Russ North's voice soaring somewhere between a battle cry and a storyteller's howl. The title track alone is worth the price of admission, all Eastern-tinged riffing and dramatic tempo shifts that make you want to raise a fist in your living room.

This 2022 High Roller reissue treats the record the way it deserves. The original master has been restored, then cut for vinyl by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony, with a fresh cutting by SST — and honestly, the difference is audible from the first needle drop.
