Background information about 'Death Cult'

The story of one of metal's most gifted power trios begins not with a bang but with a humble demo tape that would go on to become the stuff of legend. Coroner's "Death Cult" is the sound of three young Swiss musicians finding their footing, and even now, decades later, it crackles with that raw, unpolished energy that only a first statement can carry. Before the razor-sharp thrash of "R.I.P." or the technical wizardry of "No More Color", there was this: four songs written freely, with no rules and no pressure, just the sheer joy of creating.

The demo opens with the ominous stomp of "Spectators of Sin", and immediately you hear what made these guys special - Tommy T. Baron's fluid, inventive riffing, Ron Royce's rumbling bass, and Marquis Marky's restless, propulsive drumming. But the real ace up the sleeve is the guest appearance of Tom G. Warrior from Celtic Frost, who lends his unmistakable gravelly voice to three of the four tracks and even penned the lyrics himself. It's a fascinating snapshot of the Swiss metal scene crossing paths, two future titans sharing studio space before either had truly exploded.

What makes "Death Cult" so endlessly charming is its honesty. Tommy Vetterli himself laughs about it today, admitting they were still searching for their sound. But that searching is precisely the point - you can hear the band thinking out loud, reaching toward something bigger, from the instrumental "Aerial Combat" to the closing march of "The Invincible". Remastered and restored by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony, this reissue finally gives the demo the treatment it always deserved, complete with an extensive booklet and poster.
