Let's get one thing straight: Coroner were never your run-of-the-mill thrash band. While their Teutonic peers were busy hammering out blunt, beer-soaked riffs, this Swiss trio was busy re-wiring the genre's DNA with a level of technical precision and eerie sophistication that still sounds ahead of its time. "Punishment for Decadence" is where the band truly hit their stride, the moment they stopped being a curiosity and became a force of nature.

From the very first seconds, the album grabs you and refuses to let go. "Absorbed" and "Masked Jackal" are pure, razor-sharp thrash, but there's a cold, almost clinical edge to the riffing that sets them apart. Ron Royce's vocals snarl and snap while Tommy T. Baron peels off solos that feel less like showboating and more like carefully controlled bursts of aggression. The rhythm section is a machine, tight as hell, propelling everything forward with relentless momentum. And then there's the title track's shadowy atmosphere, the brooding menace of "Skeleton on Your Shoulder" and the haunting "Shadow of a Lost Dream" — these are the moments where Coroner prove they're playing a completely different game than everyone else.

The real curveball comes at the end: a cover of "Purple Haze" that somehow turns Hendrix's psychedelic classic into something jagged, metallic and gloriously wrong in all the right ways. It's the kind of bold, slightly unhinged move that only a band this confident could pull off. This is technical thrash at its most adventurous — progressive before that word became a marketing buzzword, and still thrillingly vital decades later.
