Background information about 'Wars of Spirit // Wards of Light'

Dreadnought have never been a band content with simply existing within a genre — they devour genres whole and reshape them into something entirely their own. With Wars of Spirit // Wards of Light, the Denver-based quartet delivers what might just be their most ambitious, emotionally devastating work to date. This is progressive metal unshackled from convention, where doom-laden heaviness collides with ethereal folk passages, where jazz-inflected woodwinds dance around blast beats, and where Kelly Schilling's voice — equal parts siren and storm — guides you through labyrinthine compositions that feel less like songs and more like journeys into uncharted emotional territory.

The dual-title structure of the album is no accident. This is a record split across two thematic halves, each exploring the internal and external battles we wage. The "Wars of Spirit" side grapples with the chaos within — anxiety, doubt, the slow erosion of self — while "Wards of Light" reaches outward, searching for connection, hope, and the fragile beauty that persists even in darkness. The band's signature interplay between crushing riffs and delicate flute melodies has never felt more purposeful. Tracks swell and contract with an almost cinematic sense of pacing, and the production captures every nuance: the shimmer of cymbals, the growl of bass, the haunting resonance of saxophone cutting through walls of distortion. It's the sound of a band operating at the absolute peak of their powers, utterly unafraid to follow every strange and beautiful impulse wherever it leads.
