Background information about 'Wars of Spirit // Wards of Light'

Dreadnought have never been a band content with coloring inside the lines, and with Wars of Spirit // Wards of Light they've pushed their kaleidoscopic vision further than ever before. This is progressive metal that breathes — one moment you're floating through ethereal flute passages and jazz-inflected clean vocals, the next you're being dragged into blastbeat-laden black metal fury. The Denver quartet has always juggled more genres than seems physically possible, but here the transitions feel less like genre-hopping and more like a single, organic organism shifting its shape. The dual nature hinted at in the album's title plays out across every track: light and darkness, spirit and structure, chaos and discipline constantly wrestling for dominance.

The production is warm and enveloping, giving Kelly Schilling's flute and saxophone work room to shimmer while still allowing the rhythm section — particularly the ever-inventive drumming — to hit with devastating impact. There's a maturity here that doesn't sacrifice an ounce of the raw emotional power that made their earlier work so compelling. Tracks unfold patiently, building from delicate, almost folk-like passages into towering crescendos that feel genuinely earned. The clean vocal harmonies intertwine with harsh shrieks in ways that shouldn't work but absolutely do, creating a dialogue between opposing forces that mirrors the album's thematic core. It's the kind of record that rewards deep listening — headphones on, lights off, no distractions — revealing new layers with each spin.
